November 16, 2012 - Proposition 30 Passed - Proposition 30, the Temporary Taxes to Fund Education, passed by the voters with a vote of 54% to 45%. Proposition 30 includes the constitutional protections for counties under the 2011 Public Safety Realignment. This is a very important step for counties who can continue to implement realignment with secured funding and protections against future actions by the legislature or the courts.

September 13, 2012 - AB 340 - The Governor has signed legislation (AB 340) which will enact the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013. This measure enacts numerous reforms and changes to the pension systems and will result in reduced costs for counties, as well as, end many of the abuses in the pension system.

August 30, 2012 - Pension Reform - Pension Reform is one of the top priorities for the Urban Counties of California in the 2012 legislative session. UCC has taken a Support position on the Conference Committee Report on Pension Reform (AB 340). To see our support letter, click here.

AB 340 includes many changes which will result in reduced costs for counties, as well as, many of the abuses in the pension reform system. UCC believes that this is a step in the right direction in adopting many of the reforms that have been requested by counties.

GOV Press Release: Governor, Legislative Leaders Agree on Budget Framework

June 15, 2012 - Legislature Passes Budget - Both houses met and passed the Main Budget Bill and 6 Trailer bills and have adjourned until next week when the rest of the trailer bills are expected to be voted on.

It is unclear whether the Governor will sign these bills or whether he will veto and ask for more changes. Stay tuned!

May 15, 2012 - Governor Brown has released his May Revision, which includes significant cuts and reductions, as well as, savings through changes to the state worker compensation. March 14, 2012 - Today the Governor, Speaker, Pro Tem and Restoring California Coalition Announced an Agreement on the November 2012 Ballot Measure - Today, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and the Restoring California Coalition (the California Federation of Teachers, California Calls, the Courage Campaign and ACCE) joined forces on a new revenue initiative for the November 2012 ballot.

January 5, 2012 - The Governor released his Budget Proposal today. - The Governor’s Budget proposes a total of $10.3 billion in cuts and revenues to balance and to rebuild a $1.1 billion reserve. This includes significant cuts to CalWORKs of $1.4 billion, Medi-Cal ($842 million) and IHSS ($164 million). Similar to last year, the Budget assumes that a portion of its proposals will be adopted by the Legislature by March 1, 2012.
