Improving Safety and Accessibility of Public Meetings
The pandemic has brought with it considerable change in the way local public meetings are conducted. The use of technology has broadened opportunities for county elected and appointed officials to connect with constituents and engage members of the public. At the same time a notable increase in disruptive behavior by members of the public has undermined counties’ ability to conduct business in a safe and accessible manner. UCC will take a leadership role in advocating for improvements to statutory provisions that will direct the conduct of public meetings to ensure accessibility to all members of the public and address the disruptive behavior to maintain a safe environment.
Improving Safety and Accessibility of Public Meetings
- Support continued access to remote participation for both elected and appointed officials and the public for public meetings.
- Support statutory changes that offer tools to local agencies to maintain decorum and manage disruptive behavior during public meetings, while ensuring open access and robust participation by the public.
